Yunalis "Yuna" Zarai (b. 1986) is a Malaysian singer-songwriter born in Alor Setar, Kedar.  She began writing music at fourteen, and later studied law in college.  Yuna gained a following online after uploading music on Myspace in 2006.  Since then, she's started to record music independently on her own label.  In 2010, she released her first studio album, Decorate. ¶ I'm guilty of forgetting that Asia has more than three countries in terms of music.  Growing up in the west often encourages your tastes to gravitate toward music similar to that on your radio.  Ten to fifteen years ago, I would say music in North America and Europe differed greatly in style from the music of Japan, South Korea and Chinese territories.  Now, they just seem to be separated by language.  Most Malay music I've heard is rather unique to its culture.  Yuna is the first artist I've come across who obviously has the taste of a young twentysomething in New York City or London.  She describes her own music as a mix between Mary Poppins and Coldplay.  I can't agree with the Poppins, but the Coldplay influence is gently audible on "Permission".  Her voice is like a blend of Kitchie Nadal and Feist, and this track is powered by a low indie beat and a really honest vocal performance.
