200 songs of the 2000s || asian edition: 01-91

Although I've already bowed out, I couldn't help but feel the need to finish one thing.  These songs, while not necessarily my most favorite ever, were songs I grew up with in that decade, or listened to the most.  The numbers don't really matter and were just there to keep me focused.  In hindsight, I should have made this list total 300 plus because there are more songs I wish I could have included.

Download all parts, extract with WinRar or whatever.  You know the drill.  Enjoy, peace, xo.

Another finale.  I've run this community since June of 2009.  Not a bad run.  Sounds about right considering my track record.  Anyway, I'm moving on.  I'll be working on another blog on another site.  Anyone who knows me on facebook will probably already know the URL.  I won't share the URL, but if you know my musical tastes, it shouldn't be that hard to find with a google search.

I love music more than most people, not even going to lie.  My tastes have changed quite a bit since high school.  I still like the stuff I grew up on, and there's new music coming out that I occasionally enjoy (though, not much).  I just want to experiment.  And when I think about it, I have damn good (if not varied) taste in music.

My gripe with Asian centric music blogs on livejournal now is that they're all nothing but dumping grounds for that week's new releases.  Not much originality and really only there to get comments (seriously? you're just uploading the stuff...).  They also didn't offer any substance outside of a download link.  I like to give my readers a little something to read.

The biggest regret I have is not finishing my top 200 of 2000s list.  For those who missed out on downloading the latest batch, they're under the cut so you can grab them (as bulk files).  Perhaps I'll be able to complete that list in some form.

the songsCollapse )

As long as I can hear, I'll always have a rotation of some sort.  Thanks for reading and keep listening to the music.

Victoria "Pixie" Louise Lott (b. 1991) is an English singer-songwriter who was born in Brentwood, Essex.  Her nickname "Pixie" stems from how her mother thought she looked like a fairy when she just was a baby.  Pixie did some  theatre performances as well as chorus line while growing up.  After recording some demos, a bidding war between Island Def Jam and Mercury Records came about.  Eventually, Lott went with Mercury and released her debut #1 single, "Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)", in 2009.  Pixie's first album, Turn It Up, followed that same year.  It boasted another #1 single and three top 20 singles.  The album will be re-released as Turn It Up: Louder with two new singles in late 2010.  ¶  I assumed Amy Winehouse's vintage influence on pop had worn off in England, but Pixie apparently didn't get the memo.  However, she's generally less Motown.  Her first ballad single "Cry Me Out" is a soulful Britpop take on R&B.  Lott has a rich voice, but it lacks some control on parts of this track.

Donkeyboy is a Norwegian band that was discovered on Myspace.  Eventually, it was signed to Warner Music Norway.  Their debut single "Ambitions" hit #1 in 2009.  Their first album Caught in a Life would sport one more #1 single and four top ten singles.  Donkeyboy consists of lead Cato, Kent, Peter, Thomas and Alexander.  ¶  Joseph McElderry (b. 1991) is an English singer born in South Shields.  His rise to fame was winning 2009's season of The X Factor.  His cover of Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" reached #1 on the charts.  In 2010, Joe will release his first album.  ¶  I've never heard of Donkeyboy, but I knew of Joe from tabloids (the nineteen-year old X Factor kid who told the world he's gay after someone hacked his Twitter).  The kid can sing, albeit in a standard pop way.  He didn't exactly wow me.  I was worried that this new side to his personal life would hinder his popularity, but only time will tell.  His producers decided to make Donkeyboy's hit song the lead single from McElderry's album.  His version is more dance oriented (more Glee than club) and is cheesy fun.  Some have been startled by Joe's random falsetto, but it's really no different than how Cato sings.  The original sports an eighties inspired synthesized chorus as well as guest vocals from fellow Norwegian singer Linnea Dale.  Joe's video for "Ambitions" is disgustingly adorable.  Donkeyboy's video is about strangers who share an infectious disease.  Huh.  The official CD or iTunes rip of Joe's "Ambitions" has yet to be released so bear with this high quality video rip until next month.

One of the most popular songs to cover, no matter the genre of the covering artist, is "Creep".  I know I love to sing it at karaoke.  Despite its popularity, I never get tired of it.  "Creep" has some really beautiful and introspective lyrics that stand up against time.  I picked a handful of songs (there would have been more, but they turned out to be covers of TLC's "Creep", which is also a great track) for this entry.  Some of them are standard remakes, with rock or punk oriented arrangements.  The strongest ones here are arguably by ACO (channeling Björk much), Ingrid Michaelson (I think I hear a ukulele) and the epic choir version by Scala and Kolacny Brothers (heard in the trailer for The Social Network).

BONNIE PINK, or Kaori Asada (b. 1973), is a Japanese singer-songwriter born in Kyoto.  She debuted in 1995 under her real name with the album Blue Jam.  It failed to chart, and was her first experience with recording music.  Eventually, she would adopt the nickname "BONNIE PINK" (no special meaning) and team up with The Cardigans' producer, Tore Johansson.  Her second album in 1997, Heaven's Kitchen, proved to be more successful as it included a Rurouni Kenshin anime theme song, "It's Gonna Rain!".  From then on, PINK would turn into one of Japan's most respected contemporary female musicians.  She has played at Austin's SXSW in 2005 and also at Cannes.  BONNIE PINK released her third compilation in 2006, which sold close to 500,000 units.  Today, she's still recording music.  ¶  Everyone likes at least one BONNIE PINK song.  I have quite a few, but one that immediately comes to mind is this dark b-side, "What About Me?".  It's a bitter rock song about, what I take from the lyrics, being the other woman.  Lately, her music has been more melodic and soft spoken.  This is not the case with this song.

Many people were confused when Korean rapper/singer Tasha released her second album.  Mostly because she had already released her second album months beforehand.  This album was then dubbed her second R&B album, while the previous effort was her (1.5) hip-hop album.  Her good friend and fellow singer/rapper Bobby Kim composed the music on this tender winter R&B ballad.  Some argue that Tasha's first solo song "Shi Gan Ee Heu Reun Dwi" is better, but they're both great.  This one is just so underrated yet one of the more endearing ballads of that year.  I will say Tasha's great stage personality lessens just a bit when she's singing.  Still, how many rappers can sing almost as well as they flow?

Baby V.O.X (Voice of Xpression) is a South Korean girl group that debuted in 1997.  The original members were Kim EZ, Lee Hee Jin, Cha Yu Mi, Jang Hyun Jung and Jung Shi Woon.  Their first album Equalizher went generally unnoticed, but sported two singles, "Muh Ri Ha Neun Nal" and "Nam Ja Ae Ge".  For the second album, everyone except for EZ and Hee Jin were replaced with new girls Kan Mi Youn, Shim Eun Jin and Lee Gai.  This album brought them some attention with the popular songs "Ya Ya Ya" and "Change".  Eventually, Baby V.O.X met its final roster when Gai was dropped for lying about her age, and Yoon Eun Hye was brought in for the third album.  This quintet would last for four more albums before disbanding in 2006.  Eun Jin and Mi Youn both went solo and the others have acted and modeled.  ¶ Baby V.O.X outlasted S.E.S and Fin.K.L, and could have been the longest lasting South Korean girl group, but now JEWELRY has that title.  After the label reinvented the girls as more mature on "Get Up" and "Killer", the group came out with their fourth album, Why.  Its title song was a midtempo light R&B song that remains a favorite to this day.  They followed up with Mi Youn's image song, "Bae Shin".  Each girl was given an adjective for the album's concept - Mi Youn/betrayal, Yoon Hye/purity, EZ/passion, Eun Jin/recollection and Hee Jin/consent.  Which sound like things lost or found at a frat party.  Anyway, "Bae Shin" is composed by Kim Hyung Suk of Ac+E (who I've never heard of).  It's a sleek dance pop song befitting of 2000.  Many have called it the Korean "Bye Bye Bye".   Well, except it's much better.  Unrelated, it took a while to find a higher quality bitrate version of this song (as is the case with K-pop prior to 2003).  Thank goodness for eMule.

Jo Morten Weider Kim (b. 1980) is a Korean-Norwegian rapper best known as 'Whimsical".  He grew up in Hvasser in Tjøme, Vestfold.  In 2004, his song "Coming Home" became popular and he released an album, The Glow, in 2005. ¶ I was into Norwegian singer Maria Mena for a while, maybe three years ago.  Her songs were great if you were in a less-than-stellar period of your life, but didn't want to be completely depressed.  Otherwise, I would have ditched her and only listened to The Smiths and David Bowie.  Anyway, "Everytime" is one of Whimsical's popular songs.  It's not your average radio rap song.  It's got some detached but probably meaningful lyrics (to Whimsical) as well as a kooky acoustic-hop beat.
